Introduction

Preventive health checkups are crucial to maintaining your well-being in this fast-paced world, where health risks prevail irrespective of age and apparent vitality. They help you see potential health issues on the horizon, allowing for early detection and prevention. By catching risks and underlying conditions before they become serious, these preventative health checkups put you in the driver's seat of your own health and empower you to take proactive steps. This approach not only saves you from health complications but also empowers you to make the most of your time.

This article delves into the significance, advantages, types, coverage of preventive health check-ups under health insurance, and more.

What are Preventive Health Check-ups?

Preventive health checkups include a series of medical tests aimed at identifying potential health risks. When you undergo these check-ups regularly, you can detect infections, medical conditions, and disease progression before they reach critical stages. The emphasis is on proactive measures to prevent diseases rather than addressing them once they manifest.

During a preventive health checkup, healthcare professionals conduct a series of medical tests and evaluations to assess different aspects of a person's health. The specific tests and examinations in a preventive checkup may vary based on factors such as age, gender, medical history, lifestyle, etc.

As mentioned earlier, this approach promotes early detection and disease prevention, facilitating timely intervention and better health outcomes. Such proactive measures help you to take charge of your health and strive for a disease-free and fulfilling life. And, the good news is that many health insurance policies in India are supportive in this regard. They play a crucial role by offering financial assistance for these checkups, and making sure that individuals have access to early detection and prevention measures.

Why are Preventive Health Checkups important?

In this fast-paced and demanding world today, the value of preventive health checkups cannot be emphasised enough. These checkups have shifted from being optional to indispensable tools for safeguarding your well-being in the face of mounting health risks. Your contemporary lifestyle, marked by sedentary habits, surging stress levels, and unhealthy dietary choices, has ushered in a concerning surge in health risks like heart disease, diabetes, cancer, etc.

Health issues often creep in silently, without warning signs, until they reach advanced stages. Today, heart attacks strike unexpectedly, even in the most seemingly fit individuals. The tragic passing of a 40-year-old television actor sent shockwaves through his fans and the entertainment industry. The cause of his sudden and untimely death was attributed to a heart attack. These real-life situations underscore the essence of early intervention. In this context, preventive health checkups have become more than just a choice; they are now a necessity, offering a proactive approach to health and well-being.

Here are some of the benefits of preventative health check-ups –

1️⃣Facilitates Early Detection And Prevention

As discussed above, preventive health checkups play a crucial role in detecting diseases and potential health risks at an early stage, making them easier to manage and treat effectively. Generally, symptoms of underlying health issues may not manifest until they have advanced significantly.

Through regular check-ups, you have the opportunity to uncover risk factors and underlying conditions before they emerge into critical health concerns. Identifying these issues in their early stages allows for timely action, which can involve making lifestyle adjustments, dietary changes, adopting exercise routines, or even prescribed medications. When you address these concerns promptly, you can halt the progression of diseases, promoting not only better health but also a longer and more fulfilling life.

2️⃣Paves Way For A Personalised Healthcare Approach

Preventive check-ups are like a health checkup toolkit, offering a variety of tests and screenings to look under the hood of your body. These include imaging tests like X-rays, ultrasounds, mammograms, etc., which can spot potential problems, such as abnormal growths, tumours, etc. The results of these check-ups help healthcare professionals see the big picture of your health - spot any potential risks you might face and understand your unique needs. Once they have this information, your healthcare team can create a personalized plan designed to help you achieve the best possible health outcomes.

In a nutshell, preventive check-ups are your proactive strategy for reducing the chances of developing certain diseases. They're all about understanding your current health status and identifying risks so you can have a plan that's as unique as you are and aimed at keeping you as healthy as possible.

3️⃣Vital Support for Individuals Managing Chronic Conditions

For people dealing with ongoing health issues, regular checkups are like a lifeline. They offer a chance to keep a close eye on their well-being, modify treatment strategies when necessary, and avoid any unexpected health complications.

4️⃣A Wise Investment for Your Well-being and Finances

The financial aspect is another key reason to consider preventive health checkups. Discovering serious illnesses at an advanced stage can be emotionally and financially taxing for patients and their loved ones. This is where preventive health checkups can be a cost-effective investment in overall health and well-being.

5️⃣Enhances Your Quality Of Life

Your well-being isn't just about survival; it's about savouring life's moments. Regular checkups play a significant role in enhancing your quality of life by enabling you to maintain your vitality, energy, and capacity to fully enjoy your personal and professional pursuits. Based on the outcome, you can adopt a nutritious diet, stay physically active, and steer clear of harmful habits like smoking, excessive drinking, etc. This approach not only spares you from needless suffering but also opens the door to maximising the moments you have in life.

Types of Preventive Health Check-ups

Preventative health checkups are essential for maintaining overall well-being, and different tests are recommended for various age groups to detect potential health issues early. Many health insurance plans cover these tests as part of preventative care, provided they adhere to the terms and conditions in the policy.

Here is a table showing the list of medical tests used for detecting various health issues -

Type of Medical Test | List of Medical Tests Abdominal Test | Abdominal ultrasound Cardiac Indicators | ECG, 2D Echocardiogram, Chest X-ray, Coronary Angiography, etc. Cancer/Tumour Markers | Breast mammography for women above 30 years, Pap smear/ TVS for women above 40 years, PSA for men above 45 years. Some other tests include colonoscopy or Faecal Occult Blood Test (FOBT), chest X-ray or CT Scan, CA-125 blood test, transvaginal ultrasound (for ovarian cancer) and so on. Diabetes | Haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), Blood sugar (Random/Fasting), Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT), etc. Kidney | Serum creatinine, Blood urea, BUN, etc. Lipid Profile | Cholesterol, HDL, LDL, Triglyceride, etc. Liver | Liver enzymes, Serum bilirubin, etc. Thyroid | TSH, T3 and T4 level

Note: This is just an indicative list. And these are just general recommendations. Every individual’s healthcare needs are unique. They can differ based on personal and family health history, lifestyle, and other factors.

What To Expect During A Preventive Health Checkup?

During a preventive health checkup, you’ll undergo various assessments and screenings aimed at analysing your overall health. These tests are specifically designed to identify any potential risk factors or early signs of diseases.

This is what you can anticipate during a preventive health checkup -

  1. First, the medical professional will inquire about your medical history, any existing conditions, and family history.
  2. They will perform a physical exam and check vital signs like blood pressure, heart rate, and weight. The tests may include cholesterol levels, blood sugar, complete blood count, and urine tests to check for kidney function and other health markers. The list of specific tests and procedures will depend on your age, gender, and other risk factors.
  3. Once the checkup is done, the doctor will share the results with you and ask further questions to uncover any hidden risks.
  4. Based on your age and risk factors, you might undergo tests like mammograms, pap smears, colonoscopies, or prostate-specific antigen (PSA) tests.
  5. The healthcare provider will explain their findings and suggest preventative measures. Depending on your specific risk factors, they might recommend additional tests or screenings to understand your health status better.

How Often Should You Get A Preventive Health Checkup?

Preventive health checkup recommendations are not universal; they depend on several factors, including your age, gender, family medical history, existing health conditions, and other factors. For many adults, an annual check-up is recommended, involving a review of your medical history, a physical examination, and basic blood tests to maintain a consistent overview of your health.

Specific screenings, such as mammograms, pap smears, colonoscopies, and others, are typically advised at specific intervals based on age and individual risk factors. Individuals with chronic conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure may require more frequent check-ups to manage and monitor their conditions effectively.

In essence, the frequency of preventive health checkups should be customised to your unique health needs. It is advisable to consult with your doctor to establish the most suitable schedule for your specific requirements.

Are Health Check-Up Expenses Covered Under Health Insurance?

Many health insurance plans include health check-ups for insured members, creating a mutually beneficial arrangement for both insurers and customers. The primary objective is to promote regular health assessments among customers, enabling early detection of potential illnesses before they escalate. This proactive approach not only contributes to individual well-being but also aids insurers in managing and controlling hospitalization claims. Expenses associated with these health check-ups fall under the coverage of health check-up benefits in health insurance policies.

It's important to note that the scope of coverage varies among insurers, with some offering comprehensive coverage for all health check-up expenses, while others may impose certain restrictions. Additionally, specific conditions

Factors To Consider Before Undergoing Preventive Health Checkups Covered Under Health Insurance

Here are the key conditions and considerations before undergoing preventive health checkups -

👉🏻 Eligibility and Timing

Health insurance policies impose specific conditions regarding when and how often you can avail of medical check-ups. These conditions vary among policies, with some insurers allowing immediate utilization of benefits upon policy purchase, while others may require waiting periods, such as from the second or third policy year. It's crucial to carefully review your policy document or seek advice from a financial advisor to comprehend these conditions.

👉🏻 Coverage Limits

Examine your policy for coverage-related conditions, particularly limits associated with your policy's sum insured. Some policies may cap the amount claimable for health check-up expenses, while others may only cover a predefined list of tests. Understanding these limits is vital, as exceeding specified amounts or undergoing tests not on the predefined list may lead to out-of-pocket expenses.

For instance, Niva Bupa's ReAssure Plan covers a predefined list of tests, including routine urine tests, fasting blood sugar tests, lipid profile tests, kidney function tests, ECGs, etc. On the other hand, Star Health's Women Care Plan provides medical check-up benefits for female insured members from the age of 13, covering specific gynaecology-related tests. Disease-specific policies, such as Star Health's Diabetes Safe Plan and HDFC Ergo's Energy Plan, offer multiple variants. Each variant may have different coverage - one covers HbA1c tests up to a certain limit, and another covers additional tests along with HbA1c testing.

👉🏻 Age Restrictions

Before availing of a health checkup, it's vital to take into account age-related constraints. Some policies may require individuals undergoing health checkups to be a minimum of 18 years old. In family or floater plans, the eligibility for health checkup benefits can differ. While some plans limit this benefit to adults initially, others may include both adults and children.

👉🏻 Limited To Insurer's Network

Certain policies mandate that health check-ups must be conducted in hospitals or labs enlisted with the insurance company. Straying from the network may result in non-coverage, emphasizing the importance of scheduling appointments within the insurer's approved facilities.

👉🏻 Claim Process Options

Health insurance plans may offer health check-up benefits through either cashless or reimbursement methods. Opting for cashless claims, if available, streamlines the process and eliminates upfront payments and document submissions. Be aware that the procedures for availing benefits differ and may vary across insurance companies.

👉🏻 Collecting And Submitting Test Results

For cashless claims, the hospital or laboratory sends test results directly to the insurer, who then provides you with a soft copy. In reimbursement scenarios, you must collect original test reports from the facility. Keep copies of reports for reference and submit originals to the insurer as required.

👉🏻 Other Constraints

Additional conditions may include clauses specifying that health check-up claims are valid only if no other claims were filed in the past year. These conditions vary across insurers, emphasizing the need to carefully review the terms and conditions before purchasing a health insurance policy.

Tax Deductions On Preventive Health Check-Ups Under Section 80D

Section 80D of the Income Tax Act, 1961, provides a deduction of up to Rs 5,000 for expenses related to preventive health check-ups. If you are paying the health check-up expenses from your own pocket, you can claim this deduction. Please note that this deduction will be within the overall limit of Rs 25,000/Rs 50,000.

Let's take the example of Aakash, a 30-year-old, to understand this better. Aakash pays Rs 22,000 as the premium for his health insurance in the financial year 2022-23. He  also spent Rs 5,000 on a health check-up. According to Section 80D of the Income Tax Act, Aakash can claim a maximum deduction of Rs 25,000. This includes Rs 22,000 for the health insurance premium and Rs 3,000 for the health check-up. Here, the deduction for health check-ups is limited to Rs 2,000, ensuring that the total deduction doesn't exceed Rs 25,000.
